To the childcare workers in my daughters Sunday School classroom

To the childcare workers in my daughters Sunday School classroom,

You probably noticed my daughter today. She was the 20 month old wearing a bright red shirt with the words "All my mommy wants is a Silent night." Paired with this bold choice was a pair of purple sweatpants embroidered with dark purple flowers. Of course, this didn't match at all. And each piece clashed with her pink polka-dot sock. And looked even worse with her bright orange sock.

I know that the other little girls were wearing patent leather shoes with lacy tights, cute dresses, and hair bows. But you see, my daughter insists on picking out her own clothes each day. She also insists on dressing herself, though after about 20 minutes of trying she'll sometimes let me finish the job. Actually, she insists on picking out my clothes too. My little fashionista has strong opinions on what I put on and she pulls clothes from my drawers each morning and bring them to me. If I don't agree, she doesn't let go without a fight so please understand if I'm coming to church in my pajamas. When shopping, she assumes she knows better than I do which scarves and necklaces go with which dress.

I'm not quite sure where she gets this.  Truth be told, she might know better than I do. Someday, I'm sure, she and I will be the best dressed pair in town. But for the time being, please understand about the bright red, purple, pink, and orange ensemble.

Sincerely,

I sometimes think of pinning a note to my daughter: "I dress myself." But then I think that it's probably pretty obvious.
